Create a Merge Template with AI


This Builder AI feature turns a Word document into a merge template by finding the placeholders in it and rewriting them as merge tokens — so you don't have to insert each `[FIELD]` token by hand.


Available when Builder AI Limit is set greater than zero (Admin > Main Options > AI) and your site is licensed for AI.


How to access it


Open the Record Type that will own the template, go to its Merge Templates section, and click Create with AI. Then choose a mode:


Tokenize a Word doc — upload an existing `.docx` (up to 15 MB). The AI finds placeholders in square, curly, angle or double-curly form (`[x]`, `{x}`, `<x>`, `{{x}}`) and converts them to tokens, mapping them to the Record Type's fields.

Draft from a description — describe the document you want and let the AI draft it with tokens already in place.


You must accept the AI usage charge before it runs.


What you get


This runs while you wait and returns:

  • A short summary of what it did.
  • A mapping table showing each placeholder it found and the DocMgt token it became.
  • The finished `.docx`.


From the result you can Download the document, or Save to This Record Type to add it to the Record Type's merge template library directly — no re-upload needed.


TIPS


  1. Use clearly named placeholders in the source document (for example `[VendorName]`, not `[xx]`) so the AI maps them to the right fields.
  2. Check the mapping table before saving — confirm each placeholder went to the field you expected.
  3. For repeating content (line items), keep it in a single table row in the source; the mapping handles the repetition.


NOTE ON (AI): Creating a merge template with AI consumes tokens from the Builder pool and may incur extra fees. Check with your sales rep for more information. Please verify all results, as AI can make mistakes.
