Ask why a form does what it does - why a field is hidden, read-only or required, where its value comes from, why a page never shows, why a Multi-Action does not run - and get an answer that points at the fields and settings responsible. The answer comes from the form's settings only. It cannot see what anyone typed or the record the form opens from, and it changes nothing on the form.

The feature is there for administrators when the site is licensed for AI and has an End User AI Limit above 0. It does not need Builder AI.

Where to find it

  • Why? in the header of the selected field's properties, to ask about that field.
  • Advanced Actions > Explain with AI on the designer's toolbar, to ask about the whole form.

Rules found

When you open it with Why?, the window first lists the Rules found for that field. This list is worked out from the form's settings without AI and costs nothing. It shows:

  • The field's own settings: Required, Default Value, Get Value From Other Field, Save to Record and its condition boxes.
  • The condition boxes of the page, Panel, tab or other container the field sits in. A field inside a hidden container is hidden with it.
  • Every Multi-Action step, Toolbar or Button Bar option, Button and Timer that acts on the field, with what starts each Multi-Action, or that nothing starts it.
  • Conditions, calculations and settings elsewhere on the form that read the field.
  • Fields the form does not re-check when they change. For example, a field named only in the Value of a condition does not make that condition re-check when the field changes, so the condition updates late or not at all.

Field names in the list are links: click one to close the window and select that field.

Asking a question

  1. Type your question, for example: why is Approver hidden when the form opens?
  2. Click Ask, or press Ctrl+Enter.
  3. The answer appears below the question, with the most likely cause first, then any other possible causes and how to confirm it. Field names in the answer are links too.

To ask something else, change the question and click Ask Again. If you close the window and open it again on the same field, the last answer is still there, as long as no fields have been added, removed or moved since.

What it can and cannot see

It reads every condition, calculation, default value and action on the form. It cannot see the values people type or that load from the record, who is filling in the form, the workflow step, or what a Run Action Set step does on the server. When the answer depends on one of those, it says so and suggests what to try with Open as Test.

Each question and answer is kept in My AI Activity and in the AI Usage report, where it opens showing the question, the answer and the rules found.

TIPS

  1. Select the field and click Why? before asking anything: the Rules found list often answers the question on its own, at no cost.
  2. Ask about one thing at a time and say what you see, such as hidden when the form opens, or does not update when Amount changes.
  3. Use Open as Test with the values the answer mentions to confirm the cause before you change the form.
