Split Columns is a two-column container with a bar between the columns that the user can drag to change how the space is divided. Each side holds its own fields, added the same way as in any other container.


The split is held as a percentage of the container's width rather than a fixed measurement, so the two sides keep their proportions as the window is resized or the form is opened on a different screen.


Reach for it when the right balance depends on what the user is doing at that moment rather than on how the form was designed - a document viewer beside the fields being indexed from it, a search on one side and a record on the other, a long list next to its detail. For everything else, Flexible Columns gives a layout that stays as it was designed and offers far more control over how it behaves at different screen sizes.


Settings

Field Label - Usually left blank, since a label on the container takes the label space away from the fields inside it.


Column Spacing - The gap between the two columns, from 0 (they touch) to 5 (widest).


Shadow Size - None, Small, Medium or Large drop shadow around the container.


Everything else - the width and height of the container, its borders and colors, and the conditions that show or hide it - comes from the common settings described in Common Field Settings and Field Conditions. Setting a height on the container is worth doing where the two sides hold scrolling content such as a viewer or a list, so the split has a fixed area to divide.
